“Api” by Luca Ciriello, 2023
“Api” by Luca Ciriello is a lively documentary set in the picturesque town of Pollein, in the Aosta Valley. Through the adventures of Saba, Gallo, Federico, and Jill—four fifteen-year-olds speeding around in modified Ape cars—the film captures the exuberant essence of adolescence.
Their days are filled with races on Ape cars and impromptu repairs, while the pulsing beats of trap music blend with the mechanical hum of their activities. The narrative reveals moments of reflection and fun: as the teens gather in an abandoned parking lot, the contrast between their carefree spirit and the absence of adults highlights their quest for personal identity. Each modification to their Ape cars becomes a rite of passage, a symbol of growth and independence.
These moments are skillfully captured by Ciriello’s camera, which acts as a silent observer of their friendship and exploits. The cinematography is expertly crafted, with wide shots juxtaposing the dynamic energy of the teens with the towering mountains that surround them. This contrast underscores how, despite their apparent indifference to the world around them, they remain deeply connected to their roots and driven by a desire to leave their mark.
“Api” is not just a tribute to summer and friendship but an introspective exploration of the universal themes of youth, celebrating the joys and challenges of growing up.
Produced by Lunia Film and L’Eubage, with support from the audiovisual production fund of the Fondazione Film Commission Vallée d’Aoste, and distributed by Sayonara Film, “Api” has been selected for numerous Italian and international festivals, including the San Diego Film Festival. It has earned prestigious awards, such as Best Documentary at the 35mm Film Festival in Milan, the Audience Award and Best Cinematography Award at the Sole Luna Festival in Palermo, and Best Documentary at the Cortoeacapo – Mario Puzo Film Festival 2024.
